Challenge your child to retell the story. Help him or her remember key details by asking the following questions:

• What did Pilate say about Jesus? (Jesus was innocent, and there was no reason to kill Him.)
• What was Jesus nailed onto? (a cross)
• What was the last thing Jesus said on the cross? (“It is finished.”)

Read the following thought aloud to help increase your child’s understanding:

Jesus could have saved Himself. But He loves us so much that He willingly died. Jesus did not deserve to die, but He chose to die to pay the debt we owed for our sins.

Jesus never sinned. He did not deserve to die. But Jesus willingly died on a cross to pay the price for our sins. He died to fix the sin problem that we could not fix ourselves.
