Bible Story

Greatest Commandment
Matthew 22:36-40

Activity – Priority Pyramid

What you need

10 note cards and a marker
(If you don’t have note cards, take three sheets of paper, divide them into quarters, and tear/cut them to create 12 equal-sized pieces of paper. You will only use 10.)

What You Do

Give your child the note cards and ask them to write down 10 items that are important to them—one on each card.
Say, “Now, arrange the cards in the shape of a pyramid. What’s most important to you should be at the top. The things that are not as important should be at the bottom.”
Discuss their choices. Why did they put some cards higher than others, or some cards lower than others in their Priority Pyramid?

Talk about the Bible Story

In our Bible story today, someone asked Jesus what the most important commandment was. How did Jesus respond?
If Jesus created a Priority Pyramid, what would be at the top?
What are some ways we can love God every day?
What are some ways we can love others every day?
Can you love God and not love others? Can you love others and not love God? (Ask your child to explain their response.)
How can you love someone who gets on your nerves?
Parent: Share a story about a time you chose to show love to someone, even when it was hard.

Prayer

Use this prayer as a guide, either after your discussion or right before bed tonight:

“Dear God, You are the perfect example of love. You loved us so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus, for us. Help us to follow You this week by growing in our love for You and choosing to love the people You’ve placed in our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
